Some of us enjoy the exhilaration of hiking to a mountain top. If you feel like singing "The hills are alive, with the sound of music!" when you get to the top, you know what I mean.

Growing up in Minnesota does not lend itself to mountain-top experiences. I've always been comfortable moving in more than 2 dimensions. When I was 5, I climbed an 80 foot tree to see the lake, 2 miles away. Later, in high school, we discovered that we could see what the town cop was up to from the water tower. Exploring caves, riding a motor cycle through the steam tunnels at the university, SCUBA diving, and the other vertical adventures were only a matter of time.

It was not until the early 90s that my brother Scott and I hiked two small peaks, a 7000' peak at Palmer Gulch KOA near the 4 faces in South Dakota, and Oberlin Summit, 8180 ft, near Logan's Pass in Glacier National Park. That was the first mountain top that made me feel like singing.   I did sing.

These pages include trip reports and pictures from many of my adventures. I hope you will find them interesting and amusing.

Other Adventures

California hikes and skiing during my 2002-2003 consulting assignment, including El Capitan.
2003-2004 Japan adventure
Alaska Cruise-tour August 11-21, 2004, Trip report and pictures

Completed Boundary Peak in Nevada on Sunday, 9/12/2004. Made one wrong turn on the way down and got to spend the night on the mountain. Completed Guadalupe Peak in Texas October 3rd.
Completed Wheeler Peak in New Mexico October 6th, in the snow and wind.
Completed Humphreys Peak in Arizona October 21st, in the blizzard and cold. Had visions of Shackleton at the South Pole.
Ok, there was the billboard adventure, the water tower adventures in Buffalo and Rockford, the riding a motor cycle through the steam tunnels at the U adventure, the getting shot at on Guam's Mount Lamlam adventure, the scuba diving in the Navy adventures, the midnight runs to TiJuana, the sky diving adventure, the getting busted for riding a freight train adventure, the glider adventure, the shopping cart caper, the fencing lessons ... I don't have pictures of most of these for some pretty good reasons.

Something hidden. Go and find it.
Go and look behind the ranges -
Something lost behind the ranges
Lost and waiting for you. Go!

Doubly happy, however, is the man to
whom lofty mountain-tops are within reach,
for the lights that shine there
illumine all that lies below.
