Huaynu Picchu, Peru, about 9000 ft, 11/1999 Machu Picchu is about 8000 ft. I bought a tour package to Peru. I was the only person on the tour. Most tours last a week, and depart from Miami or Houston International Airports, landing in Lima, Peru. After 2 nights in Lima, fly to Cusco, at 11,150 ft, for 1 night. Take the train to the river valley, 1000 ft below Machu Pichu, for a 2 night stay. Reverse the process to return. Never saw so many machine guns in my life, as in Lima. Wonderful people! The following picture is taken from near the summit of Huaynu Picchu, about 1000 feet above Machu Picchu. The hike is about 90 minutes. Most postcard pictures of Machu Picchu show Huaynu Picchu in the background.
