Dale Stenseth's South Dakota High Point Page

Highpoint 7. South Dakota, Harney Peak, 7242 ft, 4/17/03
Harney Peak is located in Custer State Park.

Used Wingers' book for guidance.
Zumwalt's book contains a helpful and adequate topographical map.

Custer, SD is the closest place to stay when the lodges are closed.

An interesting, moderate side hike is the trail to 'Little Devils Tower', which can be seen from Harney Peak.

There are rest rooms near the trail head, but not at the summit.
There are benchmarks, but I did not have enough information at the time to find them.

As an interesting alternative, consider camping at Palmer Gulch KOA, or staying at their lodge, and going to the Harney Peak summit by horseback.
